Foi lançado em setembro de 1967 pela gravadora Deram nos Estados Unidos, após sua descoberta e imensamente popular single "A Whiter Shade of Pale". A faixa não aparece na versão do álbum no Reino Unido, mas foi incluída na edição dos EUA. A versão britânica do álbum foi lançada em dezembro de 1967 pela gravadora Regal Zonophone.

Procol Harum é uma banda de rock inglesa formada em 1967. Sua gravação mais conhecida é o single "A Whiter Shade of Pale" de 1967, um dos poucos singles a ter vendido mais de 10 milhões de cópias.  Embora conhecida por sua influência barroca e clássica, a música de Procol Harum é descrita como rock psicodélico e proto-prog.

Em 2018, a banda foi homenageada pelo Rock and Roll Hall of Fame quando "A Whiter Shade of Pale" foi introduzido na nova categoria Singles
